"If the God you believe in as an idea doesn’t start showing up in what happens to you in your own life, you have as much cause for concern as if the God you don’t believe in as an idea does start showing up. It is absolutely crucial, therefore, to keep in constant touch with what is going on in your own life’s story and to pay close attention to what is going on in the stories of others’ lives. If God is present anywhere, it is in those stories that God is present. If God is not present in those stories, then they are scarcely worth telling." ~ Frederick Buechner

Sophie's Birthday Weekend

We made the five-hour trip to Houston two weeks in a row, and now, we are just glad to stay put.

And to have B's sleep schedule back to normal.

But the first trip was to celebrate Christmas and introduce B to the rest of the extended family, and the second was for our sweet little "niece" Sophie's first birthday party, both very good reasons to disrupt our sleep patterns travel. N has been best friends with Sophie's daddy since they were seventh graders, and we enjoyed living fifteen minutes from them in upstate NY for the past six years.

Since both Chris and Keri are from the Houston area (and all their families are still in Texas), they decided to have Sophie's birthday party here. Score for us!
There's something special about a grandpa with his grandchildren.
"What does this button do?!"
B was "helping". She was surprisingly tolerant of his efforts.
Uncle N is so silly.
B was trying to teach Sophie to fist bump.
Hey, there, sweet girl!
B got to practice golfing, ha ha. His Haraboji (my dad) would be proud.

Since our return home, B has been talking about the weekend often, saying, "Suff-ee's birf-day." It's cute, and I'm thankful that we were able to see our friends. It has been a bit lonely lately, what with not having close relationships yet, and seeing familiar faces was good for all our hearts.

Here are a few more shots from the weekend.
Saturday was really rainy, so we went to play at Chuck E. Cheese. B loves trains!

There was a great playground near Mimi's house.
Uncle Chris & Aunt Keri got him this adorable bunny for Christmas.
